art is my life!
Hello! My name is Jessie Cartwright. I have been teaching art in the Raymore-Peculiar School District since 1998. During that time I have coordinated annual and bi-annual student art shows covering themes such as America, Cowboys and Indians, the Circus, Outerspace, Diverse Cultures, All About Me (students), Island Dreams, Picnic with Clay Food, and Modern Art. I have also submitted student work to local and national art exhibits and contests, organized field trips to the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, held fundraisers with student creations, assisted in crafting and editing our district's first elementary art curriculum that has evolved into a fine example of core curriculum, organized professional development activities for fine art educators, maintained our school gallery on www.Artsonia.com, worked closely with parents, PTA, mayors and civil engineers on community projects, and most importantly, have tried to give students one of the most unique art experiences of their childhood on their journey of creativity and self discovery. I am dedicated to caring for and teaching children in art, providing opportunity for life skills, utilizing cross-curricular themes, and helping children find their creative wings.
Before receiving a BA in Art History (1993), K-12 Art Teaching Certification (1997) and Master of Art in Teaching 2003), I worked in the museum field, helping with all stages of exhibition planning and design, maintaining records on works of art and artists, and assisting with creative art programs. With my parents as graduates of the Kansas City Art Institute and both in the museum field, I grew up around art, artists and artifacts and felt comfortable in that environment. I also had a childhood dream to teach others. While working at the Amon Carter Museum in Fort Worth, TX, and the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art in Kansas City, Children's Creative art Center, I was inspired to put my two passions of art and teaching together.
My priority in life is my son and teaching about the beauty of creativity. In my spare time, I like to create or teach private lessons. I enjoy fiber design which includes dying, sewing, hand stitching, felt making, applique, silkscreen, and anything you can do to change fiber or fabric. I also enjoy clay, glass fusing and oil painting landscapes. I have a kiln at home and have been experimenting with clay and glass.
I have spent the last 30 years of my life in the preservation, creation, exhibition and education of art and artifacts. This is my passion. Art is my life!
